Here are some of the main uncertainties we hear about.
Dr Mark Hyman (past President of Institute for Functional Medicine) was a vegan
and elaborates on this topic.
Yes vegan and vegetarians ALSO die of chronic inflammation and their lives are hampered
as they get older because of chronic inflammation
IS STILL BURNING CARBS FOR FUEL.
When I heard about paleo 5-6 years ago, I studied the movement for 2 years before starting to eat meat again.
It was Dr Hyman that actually was my tipping point.
He’s one of the top alternative docs in the world and with his position at IFM
he is certainly at the heart of all research pro and con on this and many topics
Mark Hyman MD one of my mentors has evolved again. His latest book – The Pegan Diet is wrapped around eating more of a plant based diet and less grass fed meat / wild salmon etc. It’s a confusing world what to eat and many of us are following science based principles which continue to morph and evolve.

A Closer Look at Grass-Fed Beef – Dave Asprey
Do you eat Organic grass fed beef? Here are the differences. The 2nd choice Dave Asprey discusses is organic grass fed but (note finished) so fed 2-3 months of grain and besides mold is usually GMOs. Yes – the USDA allows GMOs to be fed last 90 days and called Organic. (Look for 100% grass fed or grass finished & Know your farmer). If you make the paleo transition its critical to know what you’re eating.

Mark Hyman MD interviewed Fred Provenza –
grass fed beef advantages and decreasing climate change
When it comes to the topic of meat, many people automatically think it’s unhealthy. The big “BUT” here is that it comes down to what our meat eats. Fred and I discuss how mono diets, or eating one type of food, isn’t a way to produce healthy meat (this is what conventional animal operations follow – i.e. corn). Animals that are free to forage over diverse land, though, get an abundance of nutrients that they pass on to us. Unfortunately, most studies on meat aren’t looking at animals who had this type of diet.
Fred shares some fascinating facts on what studies show about proper grazing techniques, meat quality, and even environmental impact. I often hear the argument against cows due to methane from their gas contributing to climate change. When it comes to pasture-raised animals, Fred shares that phytochemicals in their diet not only offset the impact of their gas on climate but it also benefits the soil through the quality of their waste. It’s an amazing positive feedback loop where plants, animals, humans, and the environment all win.
If one has ethical concerns for eating meat, then I support you fully and know that you donate wear leather clothes shoes etc.
If you are vegan or interested in becoming vegan then I encourage your to read this monograph by Chris Kresser – discussing the documentary The Game Changers
